Band D is the most common result for an older home. Here is how the country splits, and what each band means.

What each band means for you

A
Band AExcellent
Among the most efficient homes in the country, with the lowest running costs.
B
Band BExcellent
Efficient — typical of a well-built new home.
C
Band CGood
Above average. This is the band the government wants most homes to reach.
D
Band DAverage
The most common band in the UK. Usually a handful of measures away from a C.
E
Band EPoor
The bare minimum you can legally let a home at in England and Wales.
F
Band FPoor
Below the letting standard. A rented home at F needs work or a registered exemption.
G
Band GVery poor
The least efficient band — high bills and it cannot be let without an exemption.
